Combina Supra foil project in Budapest

The project in numbers:

  • 40 pcs of Combino Supra
  • 4 km of 3M decorative foil used

H1 Systems has renewed the foils of 40 Combino Supra trams in Budapest:

The well-known Combino Supra type trams, produced by Siemens have been on in operation in Budapest since 2006, have recently received the 10-year overhaul by the BKV Railway Vehicle Repair Kft. During the repair, the H1Systems Kft. received an assignment for the replacement of the upper decorative foil strips and other foil elements visible on the vehicles. The foiling of the 40 trams were provided under the continuous traffic of the vehicles, without disturbing the tram output, in cooperation with 3M.

Circumstances:

Although the task sounds simple, the implementation of the project is not quite that. The 10-year overhaul of trams began in October 2016, in which, in addition to the polishing of certain vehicles, repairs of sliding doors, mirror systems, auxiliary converters and certain passenger compartment elements were carried out. The task of H1 Systems Ltd. was to remove the worn out film burned by the sun over 10 years and to install the new, long-lasting black film that fits the image of the BKK on 40 Combinos.

Challenges:

The challenge was posed by two factors: the first is the exchange itself. The removal of the burnt, worn film without damaging the surface had to be realized within the shortest possible time, since trams are in great demand in the traffic around the clock. Removal was carried out with a special liquid, as a result of which the surface remained intact. The choice of the most suitable material was followed by the installation itself, which had to be done at a height of 20cm in a length of 50m. With the involvement of 3M, we put special foils of 10-year lifespan, thanks to which the weather conditions will not pose any problem for the next 10 years. The second challenge was the condition of the works. The foiling of Combinos with high passenger numbers often required nighttime work in order to ensure that BKV Zrt meet the uninterrupted tram output. Part of the construction took place in the tram depot at Hungária körút, where we had to adapt in particular to the on-site safety standards. Special thanks to Gábor Jánosi, plant manager of the Hungária Vehicle Maintenance Plant I. Traction Service Railway Vehicle Technical Chief Engineering. The other half of the construction took place at the customer, at the premises of the BKV Railway Vehicle Repair site. We are grateful to György Galló, the head of the Vehicle Repair Plant for the on-site support.

Solutions of H1 Systems:

When replacing the film, we combined our expertise in building foiling and vehicle foiling to develop the most suitable technique, so we completed the project successfully and smoothly. We have acquired further experiences to our references, which can be used in future foiling of public transport vehicles.
